A Brief History of the Park
Before becoming Lumpini Park, the land of this park was a property under the Thai royal family. King Rama VI founded this park and opened it to the public in the 1920s. “Lumphini” is derived from the word “Lumbini” which refers to the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha in Nepal. In 1941, the Japanese army invaded and occupied the park. They used this park as a camp for their military. After the war, Lumpini Park restored and opened to the public again.

There are 6 gates around the park. To enter the park, visitors have to get through one of these gates. You can usually find elder people in the park sitting, walking, and practicing Tai Chi. During the weekend, Lumpini Park is full of people and families who come in for picnics and have fun. If you want to learn about the locals and their lifestyles, weekend is the best time to visit the park.
Exercise & meditation:
Lumpini Park is open from 4:30 AM to 9:00 PM which allows people to do exercise and jog around the park. There is also a maze-like pathway that you can stroll around to enjoy the lush gardens, artificial lake, and playgrounds. Also, you can find some sheltered niches there where you can read, meditate, and take a rest. If you get tired of jogging, you can also go to the basketball court to shoot some hoops.

Another fun thing to do is to ride a paddle boat around the artificial lake in the park. Every Sunday afternoon, you will find local people in jazz outfits performing in the park. At some sites of the park, there are some facilities to do light workouts and even outdoor gyms.
