Poipet is located in the north-western of Cambodia, in Banteay Meanchey Province, which links to Aranyaprathet, Thailand. It is Cambodia’s main border crossing with Thailand. Getting in Poipet

  • From elsewhere in Cambodia

There are a lot of transportation options for getting in and out of Poipet. Poipet is directly connected to Phnom Penh, Battambong, and Siem Reap, which are the three major cities of Cambodia. Your guesthouse or hotel might have ticketing service, so ask them to assist you. You can either use the bus, van or taxi. If you travel by bus or van with the purpose of going directly to Thailand, the bus or van will likely stop at its company’s office in Poipet. So do not get off the bus or van unnecessarily as it will likely continue to immigration building.

Getting out

  • To elsewhere in Cambodia

To travel from Poipet to any destinations in Cambodia, you can either use the bus, van, or even train. There are direct buses and vans from Poipet to Phnom Penh. It usually takes about 9 hours to Phnom Penh for big buses, which usually costs around 15 USD. Capitol and Virak Buntham Express are two good choices for you. On the other hand, you can travel by vans. Vans go faster than bus, which usually takes about 7 hours to Phnom Penh and costs around 17 USD. If your next destination is Battambong or Siem Reap, there are direct vans and buses from Poipet as well.

Since 2018, there is a train from Poipet to Phnom Penh, which offers a cheap and comfortable way to travel. But please note that the train does not operate everyday.


  • After you get out of Cambodian arrivals office, around the roundabout area, you will see a lot of buses and taxis waiting for tourists. They claims themselves as official transportation services. This is where the scam happens as they offer overpriced transportation services. Please be aware.
  • After getting of that zone, you will find bus many companies’ offices along the main street, just a little away from the immagration. You can find better and reasonable transportation services here.

Poipet is Cambodia’s number two casino destination. There are a lot of casinos scattered everywhere in the town, especially near the border. If you are interested in gamling, then Poipet is your must-visit destination in Cambodia. You can find a lot of high end, international casinos in Poipet. At the same time, there are some small local casinos as well.

There is an old railway station in Poipet, located only 850 meters from the border. This railway has stopped operating for a long time. Until 2018, this railway station has been reopened to serve the public. This railway station features traditional style train, which really brings you back to the 1950s. Poipet Railway Station is a really good spot to take some good photos.

When should you go to Poipet

Cambodia is blessed with one of Asia’s simpler weather systems. It has two distinct weather seasons, which are dry season (from October to April) and wet season (from May to September). However, you still can travel in Cambodia all year round. To make your travel a little easier, we recommend you to visit Cambodia or go to Poipet between November and December, because there is less chance of rain, and the temperature is quite cool, it is anywhere between 25 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius.

Stay Safe  -poipet

When you are travelling, it is important to be cautious all the time. In Cambodia, violent crime is rare but scams and pick pocketing are issues you need to be aware of.

  • Pickpockets and snatch thieves

When you are walking in the crowd, you must be aware of your belongings. One useful tip is using a money belt. Putting your money and your valuable belongings in front of you, make sure that your belongings are being watched all the time. Moreover, when you are walking on the street or riding on a motorbike or tuk tuk, do not use your phone or hold any value things in your hands. Put your valuable belongings in your bag and wear your bag by putting it in front of your chest. If you are travelling alone, it is better to not hang out too late at night.

  • Scam

The main thing you need to be aware of is scam, especially the visa scam. When you arrive at the border, there will be touts coming up to you saying that they can get you a visa without you waiting in line. These touts will charge you as much as 30 USD. They may get you a fraudulent visa and then disappear. So please be aware and remember that you need to wait in line and only use the official border checkpoint.

Another scam is changing money at very bad rates of exchange. Please carefully observe the changing rates before deciding to changing your money at any places. You can also use US dollar in Cambodia, so if it is possible, you can wait and change your money in the city like Siem Reap or Phnom Penh.

  • Taxi

As mentioned earlier that taxis and buses near the Cambodian immigration, around the roundabout will charge you unreasonable prices. Use the taxis and buses outside of that zone, and you will save a lot of money. When you arrive at your destination, some taxis will even drop you off in a dusty parking lot out of town, but not your guesthouse or hotel. One tip for this is, simply do not pay until you are happy with the destination.
